Researchers of Institute of Botany Set up Demonstration Plots for Ecosystem Monitoring in Africa

2017-01-14
Five researchers from Institute of Botany visited Tanzania and Sudan and set up permanent plots to demonstrate the technology of ecosystem monitoring during Jan. 9-27, 2014. After the plot setup, they held field training for African researchers and made first observation in the plot. About 20 researchers from University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and Medicinal & Aromatic Plants Research Institute (Sudan) participated in the plot setting.
There are two demonstration plots established during the visit: Chato Forest Plot (CTF) in Geita Region of Tanzania, El Rawakeeb Desert Plot (ERD) in Khartoum State of Sudan. CTF locates at Lake Victoria Basin, the upper reaches of Nile, and ERD locates within White Nile Basin near Khartoum. Each plot is 100m℅100m in size and is divided into 25 sub-plot in 20m℅20m. The group members made the measurements on plant species composition, as well as on position, diameter of breast height (DBH) and height of every tree individual (DBH >2cm).
This is the third time that IBCAS researchers went to Africa to carry out ※Sino-UN cooperation action on African water§ project. It is funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People*s Republic of China.
